Hey all,

I've got some big changes coming up in my life. I'm getting out of the army in a few months, so I'm heading back home from Missouri. While I'm excited at the prospect of being a free man again, I wasn't exactly sure what I was going to do for housing.

Well I've found out recently that my family is going to let my wife, my boy and myself stay in a double wide rent free until I'm done with college in order to save some money. All in all this is good, but but it will strongly impact my ability to keep fish.

The reason for this is twofold: first, my 510 simply won't fit in the house. Its far too big. Even my 150 is pushing it. Second, the electrical system in the house is outdated and likely can't handle the full draw of my obscenely over filtered setup. So this means I'll have to unplug some stuff to cut the electricity the tank is pulling.

So obviously, I'll have to make some changes.
My current stock is as follows. All sizes are eyeballed.

Black arowana, 15"
GATF, 11"
Juruense, 11"
Dwarf goonch, 10"
2x L. elongata, 6".

I would really like to keep both the aro and atf, though the atf is the one that I consider to be inseperable. I won't sell that fish. I'm not sure if a 150 is enough to handle both the aro and gatf long term. I suspect that the aro would outgrow the 150 long before I'm able to get the 510 up and running.

Based on the growth rate of the atf, I think in a pinch with sufficient filtration I should be able to keep him in the 150 solo until 16" or so, I feel that'll get me another year or so. Obviously this tanknisnt ideal, but I may have to make due with what I have. I'm entertaining the idea of trying to pick up a 240, as I feel that is the absolute largest I could get into this small house.

The ultimate goal for me is to have my gatf in the 510 with a big top water fish, preferably a black aro, and a big cat with a pair of rays.

I realize that I may need to cut stock to get through the tough times ahead. Free housing is too good to pass up. If you were in my shoes, what would you do?

Honestly, free housing is to good to miss. I'd say your thought process is on the right track and tbh, once your more stable, (own house and stable job etc) then set the 510 up again and source the same species you have currently. That way, you know you can definitely accommodate them. Definitely keep the GATF tho! that is an amazing specimen.

Hope everything works out for you!

Would or could your parents House the 510 for you and you pay the Extra charge on their bills? Good Luck and Thank You for the Service

the biggest issue in a mobile home will be how much weight the flooring can handle- especially if it's not directly on concrete, unless you know how to add support.
Good luck with fishkeeping decisions though.

Ugh.. I hate those decisions but def can't fault your logic...

Thats awesome that you are getting free housing. If I were you id just put your bigger tanks into storage and wait until you are done with college and settled down in life.
Then you could probably set up a couple or a single small tank small from what you had but like maybe a 90 if the house can support that and even up to like a 125. You still have a lot of options even though it seems like you will be downgrading to a bucket from your 510. So I wish you luck and I hope everything turns out okay. Keep us all updated

Is the trailer already connected to the utility? If not a new panel and a couple of circuits would be a fairly simple job, if a 510 even fits.

I've never had a rent free situation or a 510 so I'm looking at this like keep both! lol. Depending on where you're going and how much you want your tank to be for show in the house, you could just keep it outside and run a wire off the pole? A transformer should be able to send every volt you want for one tank. Even 510 or 5100. You'd have to pay a lot but you'd be able to run it and keep it. If it'll fit through the door, just run the wire to the home and have a second breaker installed. As far as the floor, just jack it up an inch where you're going to put it, fill with cinders and mortar, and lay it back down. That would save your floor and maybe help out the stability of your mobile home. Just an idea and I also appreciate the service. I wanted to join once upon a time but asthma kept me doing other things.
