I tend to suggest this fish a lot, but I kinda like to go outside the box a bit sometimes.... but how about a bocourti or pearsi? Those are some awfully showy fish, imo.

i would get a native like yellow perch or a bass but if you want a cichlid jaguars are cool, oscars are really cool but they are not hardy, pacu die real easy. you could get a real monster in that tank i am working on a 500 gallon but thats just a thought so far.
+1 on checking out some of the vieja/ex-vieja species. Although beware that some are downright nasty. Others are much more mellow. Synspilums are, deservedly, very popular !

Why not get the catfish that lives like a cichlid? Hoplosternum littorale! They're out all day, they beg for food, and they do fine in peaceful or aggressive tanks for the most part. Ignore rumors about their small size, I've seen them over 8" long and mine are 5" and 6" and still young and growing. What's cooler than a pair of armor-plated beasts that swim all day? Mine make me smile every day, and few other fish do that to my face.
I think I'm going to look into the festae, amazing fish. Do you think I could get away with a female festae and a carpintis?
