And also kills every bit of the bacteria that grow on it, defeating the purpose of having it. Don't kill your bacteria, they are friends. :)

if you had like 2 trays of it you could boil one tray then a month or two later after bacteria grew on that one clean the rest :D

Im thinking about doing that... how long should it be boiled? Just till its clean? I dont want to over boil it and ruin the media.:irked:

I was wondering how long bio media would last for.... boiling it would be a way of renewing it completly i suppose

i have no clue what it does, that guy just said it. but if it worked thats what i would do. maybe try grabing and handfull to boil first just incase it totally ruins it

The media might or might not last longer if you boil them, but you would be killing a portion of the bacteria, and having to wait for them to grow back each time, never having a maximum amount of bacteria helping you clean your tank. I think boiling might not be worth it.

I also think that boiling your bio-media would be a very bad idea. I just rinse my bio-media in tankwater very infrequently, maybe every 6 months just to rinse off some of the gook. I know you know it would kill all the bacteria, even if you didnt do all the media, you could risk an ammonia spike. Test your parameters, if your ammonia and nitrites are always at 0, leave your bio-media alone!

renewing biomedia is just a myth that the producers feed you. Think about it, if you never bought more how would they make money?
