This is normal. My motoro do this a lot. I don't think that it is caused by substrate irritation, because I have a bare bottom. For me it's a sign of happiness.

i foudn out why. my ray has sorta a bad irritation around the mouth sorta liek it got roughed up. or scarped. hes still eating thouhg? any reassurance?

That sucks, if you have a strong bottom current they sometimes lift their nose to "glide" on it.
