Lighting a 6ft tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My tank is 6 foot. I use 2 three footers end to end. Its more flexible that way if you want to move them. I am considering adding other seperate bulbs to accent specific areas too.

I have got the same tank, and Personally I went with three 2 foot fixtures, each has 4 t5 bulbs, so it cost me a little more, but i have plenty of light for plants if that's the way to go.

I rigged up 4 regular screw base lamp holders, like $1.50 each at Lowes, and am using the spirally compact fluorescents, not too difficult and i can find all different wattages or colour temperatures to use, the lid is white inside so that reflects the lights back, the lamps have ballasts in them and they get a little warm but it just means my heater pretty much only runs at night.

I use two of these over my 6 foot 150g tank:

they are very well made, with full polished aluminum insides to reflect lots of light and full length bulbs unlike some other fixtures that use shorter bulbs.

I swapped out the pink bulbs that they came with and replaced them with Hagen Powerglo T8's.

looks great. by the time I bought the two fixtures and replaced the bulbs with the powerglos (which aren't cheap) it wasn't cheap, but well worth the investment IMO.

this pic was taken with a single 48 inch white over a 125 its not to little or to much in my opinion just enough considering the room is dark and background is black as well fish seem to enjoy dim lighting too hard to believe i have a 10 inch gar and two jaguars almost reaching 12 in their
