What type of lighting do I need, I bought a 5watt uvb/a bulb for my clip lamp, is this all I need? my house is kept between 77-80 degrees so I dont know if this makes a difference in needing a heat bulb, or is the uvb/a a heat bulb, its starting to confuse me.
All reptiles require a LOT of light. They don't produce Vitamin D with out the aid of light. (Vitamin D is essential in bone growth and maintenance of bone tissue and it allows for Calcium absorption at the tissue level.) A 5w bulb is nothing more than a night light. The night light in my hall way is a 4w.
You have to say its for scientific or educational purposes, I told my girlfriend the same thing, I dont understand how she got one, but now we have a turtle so im going to do my best to care for him.
back to the question, what would be a good wattage of uva/b and do I need a heating lamp as well, also I read a normal flood bulb provides just as much heat as those stated for reptiles, is this true?
Ok also will the tank be in direct sunlight at all during the day? I know some lizards do not require lighting at all as long as exposed to direct sun light for half an hour a day.
It pretty much depends on the tank size. Lamps with good UVB output and strong light tend to be above 100W in power, therefore you have to be careful not to overheat the tank. If it is a tank that is over 3 feet long I would recommend a zoomed powersun UV. Unfortunately this lamp produces kinda greenish light, but the UVB output is good and it generates a decent amount of heat.
In Europe there is a lamp called "bright sun UV" by Lucky reptile which comes in a jungle and desert version. This lamp is currently the best you can get for lighting in turtles because it produces good UVB, generates heat and has a good colortone. The 50W version is also good for smaller tanks, but I don't know if you can get this lamp in your country.
