i suggest buying a cheapo t5 system off ebay, i got the one i use for my 29 gallon from topdogsellers, just a 36 inch t5 HO light its 78 watts. i just switched out the blue light for another 10k, as mine was a reef version i have seen cichlid/plant versions. (warning: its important to realize cheap chinese knock offs wont be as nice as the 200 dollar american or euro conterparts, but mine gets the job done for my purposes.)

or you could try supplementing with a compact flourscent bulb, you know the kind for you house that go in regular sockets. just try to find one around the appropiate kelvin value. im not a fan of this second option, i think it looks like crap and depending on the bulb it might not put out a good spectrum for plant growth(ie too narrow or completely wrong).


also they actually make thousand watt halides bulbs, useless for your purposes but just dont be so quick to deny somethings existence;)

I actually can't think of a better bulb for plants watt per watt . Granted some types like soft white stink but bright white works great.

I posted a pic of the dome light and with cell phone it looks bit greenish/yellowish as the light reflects so bright but as you can see with close up pic it isn't greenish/yellowish at all.

I find them underrated bulbs . I tried pet store plant flourescent standard long bulbs and not nearly as good.

with this lighting setup would you be able to grow some of those carpet like plants? such as the grass that covers the whole aquarium substrate? is it high enough lighting for those type of plants?
 
should i get one dome for my 29 gallon or 2 domes? and what wattage are those bulbs each. how do ik if they are the right spectium?
 
what plants are you trying to grow? there are low light plants like anubias and java ferns and there are high light plants. The light bulb you originally have will suffice for low light plants.

before you buy a plant research its requirements
 
ive just got a bunch of different lighting required plants. i just want HIGH light. Im really starting to think about the dome lights.

The bulbs dont list the spectrum as just lighting bulbs but the plants grow like crazy with them .

I tried plant type bulbs with listed spectrums 6,500 k,etc and they were not as good.
They even sell same exact bulbs by same co (NIVISION) in plant type bulbs and they were not nearly as good.

I use 2 bulbs as 30 gallon long . With your size tank would also use 2 bulbs.

They make higher watts . I don't have stock in the bulb co lol but like the bulbs they work great.

If you dont get same brand I have no idea if any good as they make so many types.
I got them at Home depot cheap bulbs as 4 bulbs for $9.

Comparing the wattage that a CFL uses to the wattage of an equivalent incandescent bulb is pointless with regards to aquariums. Treat them as 9W bulbs, or whatever wattage they actually use.
