are bio balls of any use, I have a friend who's selling a bow of 300 for 25 bucks

Bioballs for the most part are a good way to get detritus trapped in your filter, which will lead to the dreaded "nitrate factory". I would steer clear of this.

Use in tank LR for biological filtration.
