Lighting my 125 uaru tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think hornwort is a great idea. With that kind of lighting (and as long as the water isn't TOO warm), the hornwort should be able to stand up to the torture from uarus. That always makes a cool look, because it allows a lot of light through in some places, and very little through in others. Good luck with the rocks and the tank overall!

Thanks! I just got back from landscaping store with 65lbs of river rock for $13.18! Much cheaper than my LFS.

I think your right. I have heard that slow growing plants tend to have a bad taste, so the uaru shouldnt eat them. i may be wrong though.

I am going to start with clippings of plants that I already have to see what works and to avoid spending the extra money just in case it doesn't work.

Hopefully your uarus can find some shelter around in there... I might try to get a taller stack of rocks or another piece of driftwood for them to go under to avoid the bright light, otherwise they might go nuts.

Another thing: here's my biggest problem with going straight 6700k. Although they are the best for growth (next to 6500k, but there's almost no difference), they tend to give the tank a yellowish look, like the spectrum's failing or something. Your driftwood is going to add a little yellowish tinge to the water to begin with, which will look cool, but 6700 k's might put it a little over the top, in my book anyway. Yellow, IMO, is very easy to over-do. Its a natural look, but it can look nasty when its too much. All depends on what you like though. Tanks shapin up! post pics w/ fish when you get them! :-)

that pic is with all 4 bulbs on....i am probably going to only run two.....as far as the color i have 2 8000k bulbs and a 10000k bulb i thought of trying.
this isnt the first time that piece of wood has been used in one of my tanks so it may not contribute too much to the yellowing of the tank

it would also probably look better if my tank were glass and not acrylic but that is what i have to work with right now.

Sounds good... yeah, acrylic can lose its clarity over times like that... but it's definitely a nice lookin tank. Are you still planning on hornwort? If you used a whole lot of that you could probably run all 4 bulbs...
