I've been searching, but I can't seem to find much info on types of lighting. I was going to pick up some of the aqua glo or power glo fluorescents tonight, but wanted to get your opinions on lights. I am starting to get more into plants and so the lights need to be closer to daylight. I also wanted the lighting to make some colors pop. I've got some rainbows (been spawning a lot but no fry. the eggs keep getting eaten) and they are really beautiful fish, but my lighting is getting old and dim, so I have to replace. What do you guys recemmend? THX.

I like the power glo. The bulbs I see touted by plant people turn the water yellow and the colors no longer "pop." A good fish store would show you the difference. I also like 10K and actinic combined. When you change the bulb, date it with a marker. ALSO wipe out the fixture with a wet towel before installing the new bulb or bulbs.

right now a 55 and a 75. The 55 is the planted with the rainbows, and the recipient of the new lights. The only good lfs in town is a bit of a drive from me, so i'm stuck with petsmart. I don't think I'll end up with any plants that would require blazing light, more of the easier species. I just figured I'd try to get nicer lights this time and wanted to see what the best would be.

Howdy,

With a 55 gal, you're still on the safe side for regular fluorescent bulbs. Above a tank height of 2' I'd go compact fluorescent. You should have at least 2 bulbs for your 55 gal, even for low light plants like Cryptocoryne. 4 bulbs open it up for more plant species.

Double HarleyK. I'd do the 4 bulbs for more options of plants. What kind of plants do you have?

right now it's got two fluorescents just standard so I was going to stick with 2. I've got amazon sword, cabomba and I can't remember exactly, but a wort of some sort :D

I'm sure they'll do fine with standard lights, but like I said earlier, I also wanted to get something that would bring the colors out on the fish. The standards do ok, but they're old now and need replaced.
