I used to keep trout, where I am they call them just plain golden trout. You can buy them at a local hatchery for 50 cents an inch. I kept them for about 6 months until it got into summer and was hot. Simple to keep. Just need cool water. Pellet trained and everything

Golden trout and golden rainbow trout are actually different species.

Golden trout and golden rainbow trout are actually different species.
Here they are called golden trout, even if its not same species as true golden trout. Albino, golden, golden rainbow, palomino and white trout are all same species of rainbow trout, just different names for the golden strain of rainbow trout specifically. There are few hatcheries that carried golden/albino strain of brook trout but they are called golden trout.

But what bottom feeder is saying is that golden trout and rainbow trout are actually a different species. Yes the yellow gene in rainbow trout may also be called golden trout but that's just a common mistake. Its kinda like how we often call walleye pickeral here in Ontario but the name pickeral only should be used for the members of the esox family

But BHARDON24 is preferring to the golden strain of rainbow trout, not the actual true golden trout.

Wow...I have never seen those before. They are stunning!

What is so hard about keeping trout? Is it just that they need cool, highly oxygenated water? If so, couldnt someone just use a chiller and some powerheads or am I missing something?

That is basically all you need. I think the chiller is the main problem because if your keeping trout you'd want to keep them in a 6ft tank and a chiller for that size tank goes from 300-1200$

Since the golden trout is a rare species we can assume that if he's buying them from a hatchery they are the golden rainbow trout.

I've been running my tank chiller free with no issue. Water temp normally a stays around 66 degrees. Every once and awhile when the dryer is running that heats my basement up a bit but I put two half gallon jugs of ice in the tank to cool it off

If trout get too hot they melt. I had brook trout before and that is what happened. I was using ice but couldn't keep up.
