Only 9 watts each, they're getting good reviews from what I'm seeing, and they're cheap as crud.

Try marineland single bright leds. Pretty cheap and perfect for monster tanks

I've looked at getting two 48" systems or two 36" systems

my only concern is that I may end up wanting the double bright and those are quite a bit more

The ones I posted above pretty much ARE the single brights, just by a different company and about 1/2 the cost. Do a search for them here and you'll see pics of what they look like on tanks about the same depth as yours is.
