interesting replys davidw . i havnt checked out the links yet but i will do with interest.
as i said ive not checked the links and i think the algae info is interesting but i do wonder what happens to fish and plants / algae in places that dont get any sun or have no daylight .
im sure there is a place on the planet where its constant daylight and as a result of this a constant night for the other 6 mths .
i beleive you are right about sudden changes in light cycles affecting ovulation but what if there were no sudden changes and the light cycles were constant ? i doubt the fish would fail to reproduce but instead become accustom to the new settings. just as they would if there were no light ie . the tank lights kept off for most if not all of the day. i think alot of aquarists keep the lights on for much longer than the fish they are keeping would have in the wild but at the same time there are alot of aquarists who will keep their lights off for much more than their fish would find in the wild too.
another point i think might cross over into advanced fish keeping is ... can lighting affect a fishs pattern / colors ?
ill have a look into the algae thing though as i was under the impresion that most plants needed specific light spectrums to flourish.
