Lima shovel nose

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He will be okay for a while but if you are looking long term then you should definitely look to have something bigger.

A 125 would work for a little while but id be looking for somethin at least 24 inches wide if you Want an lsn

I agree also that the 36" tank is too small long term for a Sorubim.

There are actually 5 species of fish sold as Sorubim lima. However all of them have the capability of reaching at least 20" to 24" and the largest Michael W. Littmann mentions in his papers is nearly 80 cm SL. Which means over 32" total length.

The five species all sold as Sorubim lima are.

1. Sorubim lima
2. Sorubim elongatus
3. Sorubim trigonocephalus
4. Sorubim cuspicaudis
5. Sorubim maniradii

Hmmm....never knew that there are five types. Thanks for the names man.

Lima is a big fish, anyone who quotes 12 in has never kept one.
18inch no problem and they swim with barbels forwards so that 18-24 in becomes 24-32 in turning space.
To keep the fish reasonably comfortably you need 8ft long x 3 wide x 2 deep minimum and remember they are happier in at least twos.

How do you find out whether the fish is happy? If you mean healthy, haynchinook's lima is a clear example of the inaccuracy of your claim...

As for your suggested tank size, considering how few limas there are in the hobby that even pass 20", a 6x2x2 should be plenty big enough, in most cases, as a "minimum." The only valid argument I could see would be the ammount of space they need to turn comfortably, due to the body shape (I highly doubt having to move its whiskers occasionally would severely distress the fish, but issues could arise if it is bumping its snout on the glass every time it tries to turn).
