Limit on LR

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
other than displacing so much water that water quality (specifically things like pH and SG) accelerate to the point of causing problems....
not really more is generally better

the densisty of the rock is important.. 3ldbs/gallon of granite displaces less water than 3lbs/gallon of pummice.. ya'know

Ah, so surely the rule is meant for rock of a common weight and not for extra light/heavy rock?

If the rock in question has a smooth surface and is non porous, wouldn't that mean it is less effective too and you need more of it?

yes, that's correct

which is why certain rock from certain places are worth more or less than others

why would somebody pay almost double for the same product?

Right, so LR doesn't need fish for an ammonia source does it? but it can handle the fish load when it is present provided there is enough LR to grow the extra BB? (I'm still thinking freshwater, I think?)

no
yes, without the bio media the biology part can't grow

Thanks BIGgourami.

I was reading once about positioning powerheads in a tank for best effect but I can't remember where I saw it. I want to make sure I can get flow under a mound of rock at the end of a tank.

remember:
opposites and chaos

like place one at the top left ad one at the bottom right
one going southeast and one going northwest
and having two going across the length of the tank and ramming head on in the middle is another good one

What do you think of running a tube from the input of one of these powerheads that goes and draws water from the corner of the tank behind the pile of rock?
