Gotta dissagree there....A tank thats full of live rock will leave it with very little actual water and and a lack of swimming room...A happy medium should be maintained between rock and water...hence the level which people suggest, and the level that works well when using live rock as a natural filter. 1 - 1.5lbs per gallon...

If I make my own base rock using oyster shells and portland cement, and I make it porous and thin so it has lots of surface area, any thoughts on how many lb/g?
 
you'd need even less.. 1 pound or fewer

and as for the tube on the powerhead thing, nerver heard of it but seens like it would work great, if you're the handy type
