Line breeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been told how this involves a lot of patience. I know it's not that easy, I just figure getting a pair or two would be my first step. I have two seperat lines two work with. My plan is to breed siblings if I'm able to. I guess my question was if I should try to "force" a pair or just let a group form pairs on its own.

Sure! Yeah if you have a method of pairing any two fish up, go right ahead. I'm all for what your trying to do so good luck!

You're going to ideally want more lines.. breeding full siblings is inbreeding. breeding back to half siblings is line breeding... or breeding uncles/aunts to neices/nephews... fish are likely more capable of inbreeding w/out much issue. and i've dabbled in it.. but I bred miniature horses for years ( let me just say most people inbreed not line breed) the closer you inbreed the higher the recessive genes both desirable and undesirable grow... but I agree w/ Duanes 100% cull.. cull... cull... 1 genetically inferior fish can ruin or seriousely set you back.

I use to always seperate my males/females and then as I desired certain traits as sub-adults allowed pair bonding to take place.. pick one A+ fish and offer it a handful of the opposite sex to choose for a mate that either exhibit or "carry" the trait your looking for. and alot of times its just shear dumb luck to get the genes you want to show. But once they do... keep books. because once you start forgetting the geneological chart all that acrefull breeding is as good as lost.

I'm good on lines for now. If I'm able to get a pair or two going, I plan on keeping track of what's going on for sure.

Yes to your question.

But what does this have to do with line breeding?

Well I have batches of fry from same female, two different males.
My plan is to try and get a nice pair or two out of all my fry. Brother & sister or cousins. I don't plan on breeding any back to original parents.
