I'd bet lava rock would work better if you smashed it into smaller pieces

I love using lava rock in my diy filters, lots of times I do crush it down into smaller pieces :)

Turnover is flow isn't it guys? So if you wanted 5 turnovers an hour in your 155, you'd multiply 155x5=775, So your combined gph from all your canisters, hob, sump, etc, needs to be greater than 775gph for a 5x turnover. Be careful advertised gph aren't always 100% correct.

Don't simply go by the pump rating on the box. Check comparisons on line. The numbers you're looking for are the pump outputs at the head (where the water actually leaves the plumbing). Distance and height away from the motor are huge factors in determining total output flow. A bladed impeller pump may output 500 gals from the pump but, distance, height, piping bends, etc may only yield an actual 300 gph from the total plumbing (total head). Or, a twisted impeller states it's output as 500 gals and has a total head of 400 gph under the same conditions.

From what I read lava rock is very good in a wet dry Bakki shower style filter. It clogs easy submerged. Again just what I read. I only ever had huge pieces of lava rock.

The industry and hobby standard has been to incorporate 1 gallon of media per every 200 liquid gallons of system.

Wait a minute. I'll have just under 200 gallons of water total. I'll only need 1 gallon of plastic scrubbies in my sump???? That can't be right. Is that right? 1 gallon of scrubbies to clean 200 gallons of water?

Typo!! Fixed. My 240 uses 5 gallons (plus a bag of sintered glass) of scrubbies in the W/D chamber.

Also remember you want the water as absolutely clean as possible (mechanical) BEFORE hitting the bio media.

That stuff works well, but it'll be prone to clogging. I'd try sponges and filter socks first.
