wow, what idiot would release a lionfish...i hope there aren't any others that were released that could posibly spawn with eachother. that would be bad

Doesn't surprise me. Isn't there a population on the east coast?

ya, but this is the first in the gulf.

Isnt it possible the the tides took it to Florida . I have actually caught sea horses- angler fish when I lived in NY they werent released the summer gulf tides bought them down in seaweed, etc

Pics? Seahorses don't bite bait (they feed on zooplankton) and angler fish are a deep sea species (1 km plus).

It was probalby just a matter of time before one showed up in the Gulf. I believe they have been found as far north as New York on the east coast.
The anglers are most likely sargassum fish.

They are very common along the alantic us shores. I catch about 300-400 a year for wholesalers. This all started in the 80's and and now were seeing the effects of it. For those who are wondering i live on Long Island NY. Here is a pick of a batch i caught in one trip last year.
