I would agree with oddball. At the least, I would go a 60x24x24 while you organised someting bigger, as volitans do get huge! They also grow really fast. Alternatively, both radiata and antennata lions are stuning fish that get nowhere near the size of a volitans. BTW, you should check out the pic of the bearded ghoul I posted in this forum a few days back, as you seem to be interesyted in these types of fishj. (good taste that, btw!)

thanks!!

thanks for all the helpful info. guess ill hold off on the volitans lion and get something else til i get at least a 180.

The fumanchu is something I am seriously interested in, maybe my first saltwater fish? The volitans do get fairly large!

A 75 gallon would be just fine, its the same with as a 125 gallon just not as long, these guys are trying to scare you from enjoying a great fish. Most people don't have the money for 180 gallon tank, or the space for it. Do you know that a 180 gallon tank will weigh over 1500 pounds when filled. That is to much weight to put in your living room unlese you brace under your floor, or put in your basement. The reason for alot of lion fish deaths is actually do to poor diet. Most people feed their lions gold fish, that does not do them properly, salt water fish have a hard time digesting fresh water fish. You should feed your lion saltwater damsels, until you get them hooked on frozen shinners, or other prepared food specially formulated for lion fish. Its a proven fact that lion fish are some of the hardest saltwater fish you can buy, people have even cycled their tanks with them, but I would not recomend that.

Hey ,man even if you cant hold a VOlitans Lion.. why not try another awesome species? I am thinking of the Pterios Radiata... or the Dendrichorus Zebra... both look amazing and get no bigger then 9" or so... I'd say for these you should have a 75G to hold it for life.. but for some months a 55G should be sufficient for the smaller lions... Im setting up a Zebra Lion tank right now.. in a 55G. But my lionfish goal is to house the RADIATA or AKA the Clearfin lionfish... Good luck, dont be persuaded... and lets see some pictures!:headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2

I have to agree with a few things "be salty" said. The leading cause of death of the lionfish is not tank size but is actually diet. Most people only feed one thing like shrimp and thats not near enough. If one of your foods are going to be shrimp make sure the heads are on and that they are "not" cooked.

A great lionfish species is the Zebra lion. I have one of these with my sharks. They say it only requires a 30 gallon tank but I would never keep it in a tank that small unless it was the only fish in the tank.

Here is a picture of mine in with my sharks that I took the other day.

You know what! The guy I bought it from told me it was a mubassa but I searched it and I couldn't even find evidence of a lion with the name mubassa existing so I figured he was mistaken and the closest species I could compare it to was the zebra. Turns out he spelled the name wrong and thats why I couln't find it. :P

Well thanks. He said it was very rare. I know for a fact it is the only one around my region. It's rare because it is a deep water species I was told.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.
