Okay, here's a list of fish that I want to eventually have in my 180G tank. It's not set up yet, but I've been doing alot (well....not ALOT) of reading and stuff.

To cycle the tank: I'll start with maybe 3-6 Dominos (my LFS sells them 3 for $30), or Chromis, depending on which one's cheaper.

Then I will add a Yellow Tang, let the grow abit, and then a Volitan, let THAT grow a little bit, then a Snowflake Eel. After that, I'm not too sure. I'm thinking maybe a grouper (the one with spots, is that the Jaguar?) or something that won't eventually fit into my Volitan or Snowflake's mouth. I wanted a Puffer, but I heard they nip on the eels, so no go there.

Any other suggestions would really be appreciated!

Oh yeah, by the time the Volitan go in, the Dominos should be gone!

3 for $30 is a bit of a rip it should be like $15 but i hear prices are higher in australia so...... yeah. out of personal taste i would get either a purple tang or a zebra sailfin tang but other than that, the tank sounds dandy.
marine bettas are another cool fish i think you could get in there, but i don't know how they are with eels. the grouper i think your are talking about it called the leopard grouper, up here at least.

Oh yeah its a leopard, i was close, still from the cat family!

yeah, prices here are quite high. A juvie volitan here would cost me $90!:nilly: So i want to be careful what I choose 'cause it can become a very costly mistake!

Are you sure its leopard?? The shop i work at and our supplers list sell them as panther groupers. Are they whitey grey with black spots? I may be thinking of a different species.
Everything you mentioned will go fine together other then that the if i was right about the grouper it can grow to about 70cm.

Maybe look at a miniatus grouper to the americans or what we call a coral cod. They are generally bright red with blue dots.
Also ide be able to get you a small say 2-4 inche volitan for more like $50-70 on the coast.

if you plan on the lion, do not put the yeelow tang in, a lion gets pretty big and if hungry would have no problem eating the tang, the miniatus will alse get huge, and will eat out the tang

the lion and the grouper would be good, look at my avatar pic, that is a vlamingi tang, they have tons of personality change colors with their mood, and grow up to 20" that would work with the lion and grouper, you could get a juvenille vlamingi for about $60. sometimes they are called blue spot tangs by those who do not know any better

here (US) we call them leopard groupers (idk why the differnce but....)
naso tangs also work and a think that an 11" lion wouldn't eat a 7" yellow tangpurple tangs get a little bigger thatn yellows and sailfin tangs are even bigger. powder drown tnags, unicorns, and (i think they're called) queen tangs, but those may get too big for your tank.

Ive heard many US ppl mention panther groupers so not sure if where talking about same fish. I agree though that a lionfish couldnt eat a full grown healthy tang of any species. A miniatus at 16-18" probs could but ive never seen one in a tank that size.

Thanks guys! Yeah "Panther" rings a bell too, I think I've seen both names being used before!

I've read on reef-keeping that a Lionfish tends NOT to go for a discus-shaped fish like the Tangs, and if I keep it well feed, there's no reason for my cute little lion to start looking for discus-shaped food right?

this thing.
