List Which Fish should NOT be in the hobby??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't think these big species should not be available in the hobby.....I think they should be less readily available to every hobbyist that wants one.......big species like alligator gars, arapaima, RTC, channel cats, TSN, and others are too easily availble to new hobbyists........IMO i think they should either make these fish more exspensive or import them less, this way only truly dedicated hobbyists that are really gonna want these fish and that now their information about them will even be interested in purchasing these fish.........I still think Oddball has had the best point so far, Research is the best thing to do with these and any fish..........

I believe it was Miles when he mentioned a fish gets so big that he mentioned it "should not be in the hobby"...which i can find that thread.

Anyway, i think the fish that should not be in the hobby, and I believe it is a long list, is the arapaima. we all know how beautiful this fish is, and owning one definitely makes it owners proud. but in reality, not many people are able to afford to house this fish. i didn't really realized how fast this fish grows until i've had one, and a 330 gallon (84 x 30 x 30) for one fish is simply not big enough. wish they were smaller...but i think this fish should not be in the hobby.
Dead ones, endangered and not yet bred ones, and these,

Anything that gets to a size that your average person could not accomodate shouldnt be so commercially available for everyone to buy in the way that some fish are currently.
Most importantly all endangered wildcaught fish, shouldn't be commercially available.
I think its fair to ban fish that are a danger to native life.

ITS THE PEOPLE WHO KEEP THEM NOT THE SPECIES....YOU CAN ABUSE GUPPIES TOO..........

NEED EDUCATED FISH KEEPERS NOT MORE RESTRICTIONS !!!

Is Paco short for Pink Taco? LOL

I think that Azul Pbass, Datnoides, and Clown Loaches should be banned. Anyone keeping those is irresponsible.

You are right, guppies should not be kept except as sex toys, I AM available.
other than that, Well I think I should close this thread, unless in the next 3 entries someone comes up with a really good reason not too.

A list of extrememly large or endangered fish commonly available (and a lot of the time pretty cheap) may make future owners think again about purchasing one, and they might look into why they are no necessarily suitable for them and maybe question the local fish shop guys statement of "sure you can fit this red tailed catfish in a 5,10,15,20,30,50,100,150etc gallon for life"

I think the stores such as Petsmart and others should post the actual adult size of the fish. The sign for the Iridescent shark at my Petsmart said that one needed a 20 gallon tank. I got an idea; they could make a little emblem of the fish next to a 10 gallon tank showing how many gallons one would need to keep the fish. The adult fish would have to be the right proportional size to the tank. That way if someone sees the pic of the adult pacu next to the tank; they will know they can't keep it. Research is good too but many won't take the time to do it.
