List Which Fish should NOT be in the hobby??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mind you with all sencerity to the thread, you may aswell guppy. Shame maybe could have reached to the guy who has a nice collection of fish in a 6x2x2, an alligator gar, pacu, red tailed catfish/TSN cross, oscar, silver arowana and a G. gibbiceps and Hypostomus plecostomus. 7 fish under 8" will be ok right? lol

Any wild caught endangered species should never ever be in the hobby, IMHO. I can't see any sane person disagreeing with that one.

As far as super monster fish go, well you can't ban them since some people really can keep them legit:

see here: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8952

I just wish that people who can not actually handle them would do some research and realize that they shouldn't buy them.

Oh yea, but considering the shear quantaties that some of these true monsters are available in, i think is unnecessary. They are sold as much as your normal small community fish like tetras and mollies

I think the stores such as Petsmart and others should post the actual adult size of the fish. The sign for the Iridescent shark at my Petsmart said that one needed a 20 gallon tank. I got an idea; they could make a little emblem of the fish next to a 10 gallon tank showing how many gallons one would need to keep the fish. The adult fish would have to be the right proportional size to the tank. That way if someone sees the pic of the adult pacu next to the tank; they will know they can't keep it. Research is good too but many won't take the time to do it.

I don't think the chainstores, (Petsmart, Petco) carry tanks that can support Pacus, Silver Sharks, Grouper, etc.) and therefore should not carry those fish. If tehy can't sell a proper home, they shouldn't sell the fish.

You guys probably didn't see this one coming.....GOLDFISH! They are sold by the millions and are abused WAY too often. They infest many of our native waters and reak havoc. Besides that too many people feed them as a primary source of food to thier preds. They are unhealthy to ALL fish and it is possible to get nearly if not all fish to eat prepared or atleast go to a healthier feeder (rosies, guppies, shrimp, worms, ect.). JMO

Well, people are being civil and giving reasons for their choices, I still say that giving more power to the government to regulate our hobby is a bad thing.

It wouldn't necessarily need to be a ban or need for government, because as said before, some people can house the bigger cats and others and who is anyone to take that away from them. But i just think that they shouldn't be sold in the massive numbers they are sold in. Or maybe shops would stock a few adults of the fish, and then people could just look at it and see it obviously isn't going to fit in my tank. Everyone is against people "freeing" their fish into river and lake systems, and a main reason is they buy a fish that gets to be a giant, and they think they are doing it a favour.

That makes perfect sense since they are the cause of most people posting on this website and others with there first thread is "emergency" or the all to common "Am i overstocked"
