So i was preparing to do my maintenance today on my 90 gal tank and as I checked out the sump I saw these little black worm things crawling/swimming in the sump. they cant be more than a centimeter long. So to check i opened the area where the mesh cloth is and sure enough hundreds of them! and these little fly things too...

Now i do have a small UV light on my sump where I have mangroves if that makes a difference.

Ive no idea what to do to get them out of there besides changing the filter pad... any help is appreciated..

Ehh....not sure on this one, but curious.

I'm pretty sure they're harmless. I would get them when I used to run conventional wet/dry filters and lagged a little on cleaning out the pads. No longer an issue with filter socks :)

Had a similar issue after I went to a drip system and slacked off on vacumming and regular water changes. Diligent tank maintaince and decrease feedings helped my situation.

The tank is vacuumed once a week on Thursdays ;) but the pad I usually let go every other week or third week because it doesnt seem clogged or anything but if thats the cause then i'll problably go ahead and start changing it more. thanks for the input every1

pretty much theyve just showed up... and after i changed my filter pad within a day i had more already on it.. I also put in the maximum amount of freshwater salt I could in the tank with the fish w.o hurting them to try and make the water conditions not right for the worms... so far hasn't affected them...

Do you have small gnat that hang around the lights and water surface and do the little worms/larva wiggle free swimming in the water column?

If so I had a similar issue in my tank did alot of research and tried everything to get rid of them. I forgot the name but they are worms that grow into gnats then lay eggs and begin the cycle all over.

I tried salt, copper safe , UV, water changes etc with no luck. They were multiplying at a furious rate!

They grow in standing water. I had a broken down canister filter with a bit of water in it that was breeding them and they migrated into my tank.

Check the area for any standing water!!! Make sure you have enough water surface agitation and flow through your sump..... To get rid of mine I scooped out the flies daily, removed standing water and in about a week or 2 they were gone.

Good luck
