in a world of my own...
hi guys, so i have two ornates who aparently are freakn pigs because they get uber fat after feeding time but normaly it goes away...now its been a couple months and it seems like they are just staying swollen fat. I havent fed them in like 5 days now and its staying the same or they seem fatter...it dosent seem like bloat but i could be wrong. They act like they normally do too. The pictures dont really show how fat they really are but gives u an idea...so is it bloat or do u think they are constapated? None of my other bichirs get this way...
Thanks in advance for any help you have...

Certainly doesnt look normal to me,have they eaten any substrate at all,do they swim normally or is their tail end sort of floating like trapped wind or constipation?

Mine are fat but yours does look like it may have eaten the substrate. I am agreeing with the other two, as to how to correct the problem I am not sure.

Either the substrate or it has dropsy. What I would do is totally no feeding till the swell goes down. in the mean time, keep your waters in pristine conditions.
All the best!

the substrate is ecocomplete because at one time it was a REAL planted tank...

these guys have been in this tank for almost 2 years now and i do 50% water change once a week...dropsy might be the problem and I'll look more into treating that...anyone else have any idea what it could be besides the substrate? guess ill have to set up a quarintine tank cuz i dont wana starve the other bichirs in the same tank...
Thanks

ok looks like its dropsy and have gotten to it to late for one of them...:( i never thought about it much before because ive seen pix of fat bichirs who ate to much before and i figured that it was normal...now i know the signs of dropsy and it will NOT happen again...im sad and hopefully can save the otherone...

Sorry for your loss squishy, hope you save the other one.
Good luck.

Steve

I have 2 delhezis, 2 ornates and 3 senegals. Two of my sens tend to eat tilapia to the point of looking like they're about to burst. I can feed my other bichirs the same amount and they don't blow up like the senegals do. I used to get concerned about it, but I don't worry about it any longer.
