Hi guys!
I bought this beautiful short body FH a few weeks ago. We were so excited to bring him home and we did all we possibly could to make his new home a comfortable one. I am not a newbie as I have been keeping Fhs for years.
This guy is a little more than 3.5 inches and as you can see here in the pic, has quite a hump and pearls too. What turned our joy into a nightmare was when he began acting weird a day after he arrived. He would dart in the tank and would turn on his stress lines 24/7! He would eat when fed but would otherwise hide behind the filter or go really dark all of a sudden.
All it would take is for someone to walk across the room or for us to switch off the aquarium light and he would go crazy. The Ph and nitrate levels in the tank are normal and the water is not hard either.
Initially we thought that he needs to get used to the new place and would settle down in a week or two but it has been more than 3 weeks and he still remains terrified. We have tried everything form adding aquarium salt to removing the background wallpaper to make him relax but nothing seems to help.
Since he was shipped to our residence, we did not have the choice of checking him up before we brought him home. The shipping was for less than an hour, though.
We noticed a small white swelling outside his gill pad and although it has neither decreased not increased in size over time, it still worries us. Could that be the reason why the fish is acting weird. Have you guys faced such a problem? It does not look like a parasite. Just overgrown skin or something. Have never seen it before!
Any advice on what to do would be really appreciated. If he remains like this for another few weeks, we may have to give him away. Its sad because we do like him and want to keep him but his behavior is driving us up the wall.

His photo can be seen in my other post. I cant seem to upload it here!

Do give me your opinions!
Thanks!!

Oh, no it isnt. He's still very small and looks lost in the tank. :P
He's barely 3.5 inches....actually.

The funny thing is, he was perfectly fine the day he came home. It was only after 24 hours that he began to act weird and it has never stopped since.

I miss the little cheerful guy. I am going to do a 50% WC now. Hope it should make him feel better.

How odd. Do you have the liquid test tube kit to check water quality with?
1st thing I'd do is check for ammonia, nitrites & nitrates with the API test kit. The strips are worthless. Don't worry about pH/hardness, etc.
Fish do commonly act that way when their water quality is off.
Was the tank cycled before he went into it? Or did you add a fully cycled filter to it when you put him in?

Yeah, it is odd. We dont get those testing apparatus and stuff around here. I did one thing though, which possibly could be the reason behind the problem. I did use corals as the base for the tank and perhaps he ph must have shot up. We did a partial wc last week. I am about to do another now and am hoping to see more changes in him.

The tank has been cycled. I was keeping another Fh for more than 1 1/2 years in it.
