little salt tank

Research and take salt water slow. You can not go out and buy the tank and fish in one day. Your tank will have to cycle. (3 weeks or more)

I really like how live rock seems to essentially cycle the tank for you by the way :) I wasn't planning on buying that reef tank; I was just curious on the price. SHE was originally asking $1000 haha, and I just can't drop that much cash at one time. So far, I decided on a 20 gallon because that happens to be what I have lying around. Someone mentioned a skimmer/filter combo; are they any good? That might be something I'd want to look into because otherwise I'd only have a HOB filter on hand, and I don't think I'd want to start salt with that. This will be done very slowly don't worry :) I already explained to my roommate that it'll take awhile, and she says that's fine. Thanks for all the help! We're moving into a house on Monday, so I won't be setting anything up at all until then.

I met I guy a couple of weeks back that had a clown in a 10g tank with no protein skimmer and an aquaclear HOB with some rubble in it. Tank was surprisingly nice. A couple small BTA's. Said the tank hadn't had a water change in almost a year. Just top ups!

That's crazy....I don't know if I could ever do that. I feel like I'd have to change the water at least once a month at a bare minimum

water changes benefit more then just reducing ammonia, nitrite, nitrate etc....they also replenish the natural balance of the water. salt water as it ages loses its purity...Protein skimmers help "scrub" the water of fine contaminates and such. on your tank it is not essential, but of course would never hurt. id bet, that despite his tank being "nice" it is likely an unhealthy habitat. dont follow his steps, do the 2 gallon a week water change and save yourself the hassel with algae and such.
