ive noticed petco sells bamboo shrimp and they sell the live bamboo to put in tanks.its fully submerged. is this bamboo only ment for food or is there a way to grow it in the tank?

The plant you are referring too is commnly known as lucky bamboo (it is actually not a bamboo but a loosely related species). Lucky bamboo will grow submerged, but the leafs must be allowed to extend above water, otherwise it won't last more than 6 months or so
how do you plant it, does it have roots? i have a 150 (2.5'tall) with sand in the bottom. will it reach the top before it dies?
I have this bamboo in my 100g tank. When I bought the bamboo 3 months ago, I cut them all just below the water line. The ones that have not grown above the water line seem to be growing moldy or have an algae accumulation, but the others than grew out of the water look far better. Roots are just hair-like structures and spread out in my sand substrate. BTW, even the clippings can be planted and will grow roots as well.
This is a Dracaena, and is not even "loosely related" to Bamboos. They are not aquatic plants (Nor are true bamboos) and while reasonably tough, they don't always do great in aquaria, and often perish after a while.
i have some lucky bamboo on my desk and its growing rapidly so yes it should reach the top b4 the 6mounth mark. u think i could but my bamboo in my 10G with my 2 bichirs? that would be cool.
I want to put either lucky bamboo in my tank or some real bamboo, I like the look f the lucky bamboo but i don't think it will grow fast enough.
Bamboo are mostly Asian, but almost every country has one, or a close relative. Neither bamboo, nor Dracaena (lucky bamboo) is an ideal aquarium plant candidate.
