Live Food and parasites?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can use a lot of things as a staple, but it's always safer to use insects as staple for all sub-tropical channas. That being said, only shelled worms isn't going to be working long term. Try crikets, locusts, earthworms, etc. on top of what you already feed him.

I am definitely not against fish filets every now and then, but again, not as a staple.

As for salmon and hikaris, those should be consumed in very (and I mean VERY) limited amounts, both of them being way too fat for any channa.

To the issue of your fish squirming, I am pretty sure it's not because he only eats worms. If it swims funny, it has a problem that is different then the diet.

Actually he is not swimming fancy or something like that now he acts normally maybe it was my mistake , we ll see. You think is better frozen worms (morio meal ) or live worms are better? I m afraid of parasites

Striata is a tropical Channa, and has a large distribution.

Amongst Channa species, striata is a piscivore, even so they do get insect on their menu, as any top water predator would, a diet of only meal worms and super Worms will cause health issues even in insectivore channas such as stewartis, aurantimaculata, barca.

What other i can feed him? I cant find other worms than these two..i dont like krikets i have live and one jumped and my wife was screaming hahaha

-dc- said a staple of superworms was what he used for aurantimaculata. I’ve been using primarily that with some shrimp and mussels thrown in once every 4-5 feedings. The super worms are kept in a bowl of fish food for 2 days before being given to the snakeheads. The worms turn pink like the fish food.

Here are a few pics of my aurantimaculata even I used to feed gutloaded superworms, although I grew the fish from 5" to 14-15" on a mix of foods
Hikari cichlid gold
Dried shrimp(macrobrachium)
Live macrobrachium shrimp

Later on as I learnt more about these fish, I changed the fish's diet to crickets and super Worms, I saw a great change in attitude and the fish became more active and aggressive. Grew the fish to 18-19" before giving it away, as I couldn't keep it anymore

Striata, more fish meat and occasional insects is what I would do personally

O right , i can try mussels and shrimps they count as fish meat i guess :P I found the problem which cause different swimming behavior for my striata and its called MORIO worms. I fed today my striata with morio. I chopped a worm in two pieces the back and the head (in half) the back was dead and i gave it to him, he had no problem..then i fed the alive part (the worm was still moving) and my striata swallows it instantly. After 1-2 mins he was moving insase like he had parasites in his belly. Can this cause serious damage to my snakie? Should i add medicine for internal parasites and worms? It was like virbrating all the time...

He might be sensitive to the super worms legs moving a long with the mandibles that may be biting. My aurantimaculata have no issues but ur fish may have a sensitive stomach. I very much doubt it’s doing physical harm though.

U can simply chop its head off and see if that fixes the issue.
