I live outside of Los Angeles and would like to know where I can buy some live food for my baby bamboo shark. I have tried putting in some goldfish to see if he would try some. Well, the shark never chased after it. My lionfish eats the goldfish fine but I know that goldfish are not a good diet. I have frozen silversides that my shark loves but I would like to get some live food for him. Where can I find some live silversides, anchovies or squid?

i think bamboo sharks also like to eat inverts.you can easily find live clams and shrimp at your grocery store.

Yep, do live shrimp or other inverts. They'll go after that since it's a lot more natural than going after fish. And you're right - goldfish is one of the worst things to feed other fish.

Yeah - feeding a Shark, a Goldfish or any FW fish is basically akin to feeding a child candy.

They'll eat it, but very bad for them.

Most benthic "aquaria Friendly" species such as bamboos love sw inverts - like Shrimp, crab, clams, & squid.

Btw - why do want live food. Feeding the shark live food means the shark has to chase it down - which wouldn't be bad if - it back in the wild. But in captivity - this isn't neccessarily a good thing. Especially if you have other aggressive predators(like a Lionfish) in the tank with it.

The best food for bamboos - is fresh sea food (Human grade quality).

IF you want the shark to "hunt" for the food - try taking a few small bit size pieces and hide them. Although the Lion may attempt to find them and eat them before the shark does.

So your best bet - to ensure the shark is getting enough food - hand feed it(using a feeding stick or some other form of feeding impliment) by place the food right under it's nose.

actually sometimes i do see live shrimp.why do you want it to eat live food anyway??

Well the reason I am trying to find live food is that my lionfish will not eat anything else so far. My lionfish is a new addition to my tank (two weeks) and I was told to start on live food and wean him to eat frozen silversides like my shark. Now, I have the problem of feeding frozen silversides to my shark and providing live food for the lionfish.

Currently, all that I can find is feeder goldfish to eat for my lionfish. I know this is not good but he won't eat anything else. I have tried brine shrimp also and the lionfish won't eat. This is the whole reason I was looking for some live food that is nutritious. That way I only have to feed one type of food. Maybe my lionfish and shark will eat some squid or shrimp from my local grocery store. That is what I am going to try next. Does anybody have any other suggestions?

you could try ghost shrimp.the shark and the lionfish might accept this.the ghost shrimp should be live.even though you might think they are pretty, green chromis(live) make good food, too.

Tend to agree with Brenden's selections of Foof for sharks.

Shrimp, Crab, Squid, Fish, & even Krill - make for great food choices for "Aquaria" sharks.

Btw - IMO it's not good to have your shark & Lion eat the same food. That would only inspire competition for food between the Shark & Lion - which could potentially result in the death for either your Lion or Shark.
