I'm not sure which to get starting off my 90 gallon reef.

What are Pros/Cons of both?

Live sand is more expensive, but it has beneficial bacteria, makes the cycle a bit faster.
Dry sand is cheaper, has no bacteria, and may take a bit longer to cycle.
I would go with dry sand because it is a lot cheaper and within time it will become live sand.

Well as long as your doing adequate live rock, your regular sand will get seeded by it. So if you did both, it would be an overkill really.

honestly i don't buy live sand anymore..

dry sand comes in more option (sugar grade, mixed grade, black, pink, sunset ,etc) and doesn't cloud like live does..

in a few months or so it'll be live anyways..

OK, thank you. i really didn't want to mess with live much anyways.

Any suggestions for good quality dry sand for reefs?

why not just get 80lbs of dry sand and a 25lbs bag of live sand, to mix. Afterall the sand and rock is never enough to fully cycle a tank, so who cares how much bacteria your adding into the tank right off. Over time the tank will become just as stable if you were running all live sand. My 120 is up and running 100% and only 35% of the sand is live, the rest was purchased dry and aged naturally.

Give it some thought before you sink alot of money somerwhere it really isnt needed.

+1, for a good idea.

Its' just that i bought a 90 gallon reef ready tank that came with everything, but the sandbags (live sand) said "Use before 2006"

That was 3 years ago if i'm not mistaken. :)

Well, this thread doesn't seem to be dieing, so I'll just post these here:

I've been at war with that reddish algae for along time now, it seems to sprout over night, how can i destroy it for good?

That poor tank, all that's in there are two clowns and a firefish(that of which i didn't buy, Liveaquaria somehow accidentally got it in the box without charging me..)

But it really depresses me that my tank is in such state, i hate to see this. that's why i got this 90 gallon. I've always heard bigger tanks are "easier" because of many things, idk why i thought i could start off with a nano.
