Ok so have a idea?? :D If we go to the LFS and get live rock it came out of the ocean at some point in time and now is sitting in there tank with water running on it. They take the rock out from time to time and clean it and change the water on it and charge us $5.00 a lbs.

So why cant I or can I go to the ocean and dive for nice rocks not coral. As I am a S.C.U.B.A diver and then just take it home and do the same steps they do and the cost would be little to nothing.

Just wanting to know.

Thanks!

well as i c in your picture you live in california and so do i. I had the same idea but the only problem is the water here is very polluted even if u go out to catolina island so putting any rocks in that tank will just destroy everything else

thats why we put it in a bucket run some power heads on it change the water and clean the rocks with a brush. Do this for a few weeks and see what happens??

Here in cali are you?

You probably want to go check local restrictions on what you can and cant take out of the ocean. And yeah, CA waters, esp. near populated beaches like malibu and SD aren't exactly the cleanest waters. Plus the amount of money you spend driving there and back will probably be the same amount as the rock, unless it's a huge piece, but then how will you get it out of the ocean?

pretty sure brushing the rock is not goin to get pollution off of it. The money u spend in gas in a boat goin out far enough to get past the crap we pollute the ocean and the money involved in diving isnt goin to be worth it. Unless your just wantin to do it for fun i dont think youll save any money. If this was the case, i dont think rock would be at the price its at now b/c it would be so accessible.

Yeah I would not just drive down there for the rock but I next time I am there I could get some. Far as getting it out I would just put it in my bag bring it out. if it was a big piece then just bring it out lol.

Yeah I know our water here sucks but thats why I was thinking to brush it and do the water changes.

I mean if your already out there diving for something else, i guess its worth a try. Just might wanna check the regs on collecting. Hate to get stopped and fined over some rock.

just make sure its legal i tried searching it but couldn't find it so if you find it tell me and if it works out tell me how you cleaned the rocks

Somehow, I doubt the Society for the Conservation of Ocean Rock has had any success getting its cause approved by congress.
