I am not sure what to do, my dad is telling me to go live and everybody else is saying go dead. Can anybody tell me what is the best and why? Also where did you buy it and for what price?

Live is jsut quicker. I filled my tank to start with 50 lbs of dead rock and 5 lbs of live rock... I just put it all in... Not to sure how long it takes for it all to become "live"

Should I be taking a different approach to this such as mixing both dead and live rock? How is this beneficial to the tank? I know it is beneficial to my wallet and how much of each should I get for a 30 gallon setup

Are you going full reef or fowlr ? Read up on those articles... I had a 35 gal, got all live rock because I was in a hurry to set up... If you are going full reef, I would recomend 15 lbs of live and then 15 of dead. Alot of people recoment 30# for a 30 gallon. But its really all about surface area of the rock. If you can find really good peices then im sure you can be a few pounds short. I had 40 in my 35 gal.

Basicly "live rock" has allready gone through a nitrogen cycle unlike "Dead" rock. Live rock has They call it live for the small worms n other things on it. Not because its ability to handle nitrogen wastes in the nitrification process. ALL ROCK CAN DO THAT

Screeeeech!!!!!!

Omg Im not gonna buy live rock ever again now! Not even if they paid me 5$ to take some of it off their hands. The cracken worm is like waking up in a bed full of cockroaches.

PSSST "cracken worm" O.O **SHIVERS**

Oh great here come the endless hours of nightmares.....

yeah its a monster !

When you dig really deep it gets kind of confusing. The arguement has been ongoing on what to use. Your tank will be stable either way after going thru the first cycle with some live rock in there and base rock.

Its better really not to try n understand hahaha. You need both, but base will never really become live truly but really you dont need ALL live rock its just helps keep w/cs down and better water quality. But you can also get harmfull things. hahaha its a headach.

if this helps at all im going 50 lbs of dead rock and 30 lbs of live rock in my 125 gallon.
