Live Rock Vs. Dead Rock

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Live Rock means it was collected from the ocean - there's stuff alive on it and in it.It most definitely does not mean it has enuff B+B or even any to support fish life. We have no idea what's on it or in it. Cure all Live Rock.

Base Rock is not macro rock or live rock - it is heavier and far less porous and usually has very little flat surfaces for attaching corals - it is by definition foundation rock that supports the LR.

Macro rocks are dry rocks that were in the ocean at one time. More porous than base and usually has flat surfaces.

Aqua cultured rock is man-made from cement and then sunk in the ocean or held in holding tanks for up to several years.

When I finally get to set up my cube I plan to go with 25# of dead and 5# of live from a tank from someone I know and trust, unless I'm able to get a deal on all 30# live. Dead is by far much cheaper but good quality live from a trusted source can bring in many pleasant hitchhikers.

Well I am going to stock my 30 gallon tank(30/18/12) with 3 green chromises, 2 ocellaris clownish, 20 snails, 10 hermit crabs, a sand shifting starfish, cleaner shrimp and arrow crab

Does anybody know where I can find Marshall island live rock (cheap), I love the look of this rock (shape not color) and would like to buy some but I can only find it on 2 websites and it is really expensive for 30 pounds of it.

I bought 75lbs of dry rock for 99 cents a pound. It was delivered in about 4 days. This is for my 220g that i already had about 100lbs for. Now im at 175lbs and i hope my 800w t5 seeds this new rock fast as it is a paper white color especially next to my LR with purple on it.

90% dry/dead.... in order to ensure that there are no bad hitchers and that it's pure rock...then 10% of live rock from a trusted source to seed it. that's how i've done mine
