Live Sand to seed Dead Rock?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
After water clears grab a magnifying glass , or glasses and look for life on sand , and aquarium glass . You should see coepods tiny crustaceans, maybe small worm like creatures as well.

As for seeding your rock with coraline algae a small piece of live rock will have to be added like stated .

There are a number of ways to make your rocks live, but really it takes time no matter what. If you just run the tank for 6 weeks (maybe feed a little) it should cycle and become live just like any other system. From my experience the live sand, live rock, and bacteria-in-a-bottle speed up the process, but you will still have to wait and watch for your ammonia/nitrite spikes.

SW tanks do take longer to cycle than fresh (by about 50%). I have known plenty of people who have thrown a fish in to help cycle the tank, and with live sand he may be on an okay path. However, considering he bought 10lbs of sand I assume this tank isn't very large. The live sand itself can cause a bit of an ammonia spike from die-off, so I'd say it's unwise to add a fish without checking for nitrogenous waste.

Good thing puffers are tough. Hopefully you buy a test kit to make sure you don't poison it with its own waste.

I have test strips. I think TheKid12 made a rude comment and I don't appreciate it.What do you want me to do?I am working on getting the live rock and the tank had been cycled before hand and the rocks cured. The fish is doing fine and I have been slowly switching it from fresh to salt water all night and all today.

I guess the GSP will be OK with no microorganisms. So, don't bother seeding the substrate any longer. The tank is now a single-species tank since the GSP will maul anything you put in with it.

I hope you've already started a snail culture to feed the puffer. Their primary diet is snails and they hunt snails that are at least the size of the puffer's eyes. Whatever you're set to feed it, the food must have a hard carapace/shell so the puffer can keep it's teeth growth in check. Otherwise, you're going to have to trim the puffer's teeth yourself. It's not hard to do but, usually stresses the puffer to death.

If you would listen to the other thread where people told you what to do you would be good. You had 14 replys saying the same thing and you created a new thread because you didn't want to do what we advised.
