Live sand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's not the live stuff you want, there's eggs and other dormant organisms in it. This guy at my lfs took some and added it to a tank with just new saltwater, and within a week the sand had different color algae and diatoms on the sands surface.

Something just occurred to me. Is that its purpose then, to provide the "ammonia bomb" that's needed to jump start a cycle? Did it just get this reputation as being a live bacterial colony and cycle-less jump start over time and with the help of rumor? Or is it simply what people think it is and the companies producing it are laughing all the way to the back, so to speak?

common sense and common knowledge - yes it is collected live then suffocates and decomps - nature is complex and symbiotic very hard to store in bags and bottles for long periods of time. It's not however deceptive, ppl can buy fish urine in a bottled to produce the same results - it jump starts biology.
