Live vs Pellets?

Pellets have the potential to be very healthy, but they have fillers. You see your fish grow because of high protein from the fillers, but on the other hand, the fillers could be doing harm from within the fish. As long as you have a good diet and have some fiber in with as well, these problems should no occur.

Live food can also provide a lot of nutrition for fish. Insects and worms are both very high in protein, and the fish love them. Any kind of insect will work, just put it in the water and your fish will probably eat it. However insects probably are not very filling to your fish.
I'm not sure of the different types of worms, but I feed my fish earthworms in the summer. And when I feed this earthworm diet (3-4 earthworms a week) I notice rapid growth from my oscar.
Feeder fish can also be beneficial to your fish as well. Quarantining any bought feeders will help prevent any transfer of disease. Some people like to gut load their feeders with healthy food that their fish does not like to eat as well.

Frozen foods are not as packed with proteins as pellets or live, but they usually have a good amount of vitamins. Most frozen food will O.K. for your fish, but some food like Beefheart should only be fed once in a while. This is because it contains mammal proteins which not all fish may be able to digest.

a varied diet is best!

but.....

:headbang2Hikari carnivore/massivore:headbang2

I was given a bunch of food with a craigslist tank deal. I noticed that the Tetra Jumbo Cichlid sticks that you can buy at walmart for a fraction of the cost of Hikari has nearly the same guaranteed analysis.

I noticed when I started feeding my fish good ol' earthworms they grow faster and seem healthier. Earthworms are also neutral in ph so they are better for your water

That was strange. I thought I multi quoted it and must have completely forgotten it instead.

The compilation has been amended anyway.:)

thanks lupin I think the compilation has everything we need and nearly all arguments stated. further discussion would probabally be best in the respective fish type forum as hybridtheory pointed out.

I have noticed that whatever you decide to feed your fish..........that feeding small amounts several times a day as apposed to large feedings tends to speed up the growth rate of my fish. I think the small portions, more often, causes the fish to process the food at a faster rate.

ok this is partially off topic and partially on topic but what are considered the best insects to feed? i've always been curious if things like beetles, ants, flies and such are good for fish?
also what about tadpoles and snails? i really think there's a lack of information on live foods other than fish. i know there's charts out there with a little information but i'm sure there are ppl with experience with a variety of good live foods (outside of the usuals)?

oh yah im sure there's lots of pellets out there just as good if not better then massivore and carnivore. its just that my fish really like those 2.

i feed earthworms too, thats my fishes favorite food.

did u read the whole thread? lots of good points were brought up about all different types of foods.

you just got to ignore all the opinions/theories and read the facts, that way its not so confusing to understand.

hybridtheoryd16-dude seriously lay off the cichlid hating-I have an idea of what types of fish you keep-Aces and Predatory Characin-believe it or not they can be weened off live food-you just haven't tried.

u should quote the response ur making ur statement towards. i find some people who read threads don't go back to check previous posts and may become confused. i've seen it to many times.. quoted by death sting!

LOL!! Like you quoting me on what hyridtheory actually quoted.

Not off topic.

Best insects IMO are moths. Bettles could be O.K. as long as they aren't too hard, I don't see it being an issue though. Ants are pretty small, wouldn't really fill your fish up. Tadpoles! Never thought of that, probably pretty good snack. Snails wouldn't help much unless you got a larger one and those can be expensive. I usually just grab the biggest bugs flying around my outside lights at night.
