Does anyone have experience breeding them? And how rare are they in the hobby? I have been looking for something to breed for a while now, but with so many species of African cichlids out there its hard to just select one species to focus on... I wanted something thats rarely hybridized, and not so common!!! Ive found reputable dealer that actually drives from south carolina to florida to buy F1 species to of fish, he lives within driving distance from me, and Ive actually stocked my Mbuna tank with his stock... I bought a female Livingstonii from him friday, and if I decide to breed them, I will get a group of 4 for a 250 gallon!! His stock is beautiful, I havent found out how to post pics from my phone but when I do, ill post a pic!!!

They are very common in my area. They are beautiful fish, however, so you shouldn't have any problems if you're looking to breed and sell the younglings.

If you want a fish similar to the livingstonii but not quite as common, there's Nimbochromis Venustus, and Placidochromis Milomo (VC-10). The VC10 juvies and females keep the "camo" pattern while males color up nicely. I'm not too familiar with venustus, but from google it looks like they keep the camo pattern as adults, and add some more colors to it.

Female venustus keep the camo pattern. Males will add a fair amount of yellow, especially on the forehead. Very cool fish, although I wouldn't consider them to be uncommon.

Venestus is common and Livingstoni is a bully. The Milomo is stunning all grown up and is generally very placid.

Here is a crappy cell camera pic of my 7" Milomo.
