Hi Guys, im going fishing during the spring break time off, and i wanted to get a bass for my tank, im going to try to get one not too big so he could live some time in a 150 Gallon and if he gets to big, i could put him back in the pond. Is there a certain way to keep them from injuring themselves while getting hooked, or just hook em' and hope he lives? I've looked up how to care for one and have all the food necessary for him to live in the tank, any tips, let me know! Much Appreciated.

is this pond your own private pond? if it isnt and you are not gonna keep it for term, i would not do it. in most states it is illegal to release fish that have been in an aquarium back into the wild. even if it is the same body of water that it originally came from. the reason being that you may introduce parasites and diseases into that water. if you want to keep something like a sunfish, that would bbe able to be kept in there its whole life. you could actually keep several in there. a bullhead would be nice too. a bass grows fast and will outgrow that tank in a year. i had one that i caught with a cut in half two liter bottle as a fingerling and he was over a foot long in a little over a year. hey eat like hogs. depending on the price of minnows in your area you could be spending 50 bucks a month on food just for that one fish.

Hmm, good to know. its actually my uncles, neighbors pong, not sure how many gallons, but its pretty big, he has other fish in there i think that come from the pond, im sure he'll accept it, anyways, ill be sure not to release it back after i put it in my tank, but anyways any info on how to catch and get it to my tank safely?

good ole fashion 5 gallon bucket, catch just one, u wont need an aerator if you keep the bucket out of the sun

i would try a cast net. a hook shouldnt bother them too much. just smash the barb down to keep the injury down. when you hook him, you have to keep good tension on the line the whole time so it dont throw the hook. i caught my bullhead this way. a minnow trap could work too then you would be able to keep him for longer.

Try a minnow trap to see if you can catch some frys. If you want something bigger by fishing, then get rid of the barbs on the hooks to minimize damage. I would do as Cod said and just use a 5gal bucket, and keep it out of the sun. Swap about 1/2 the bucket water every hour or so with new water to replenish O2.

i have used the bait saver buckets to move fish all the time. when i use them for bait, even in direct sunlight for hours in the middle of summer, the water stays cool and the battery operated aerator keeps the o2 up add day as well
