they are tough fish and dont need much. see what the ph of the lake is and match it. when i do water changes, i just treat the water with seachem prime and that is it. as far as temp, i dont heat my native tank. it stays at room temp, about 70.

Haha, thats cool! What do you recommend starting him off with? and what do you feed your gar as well?
if you are going to release him back into your pond, feed nothing but live. down side of that is you could be introducing parisites and such into your tank. that happened to me with anchor worms twice. LMB can eat a fish that is up to half there size so whatever size you end up with, size your feeders accordingly. I would not recommend feeding him feeders that large but i have seen mine do it and also while fishing they hit lures of the same size ratio. if you are going to keep him indefinately, try to pellet train it asap. it is much cheaper, nutritionaly balanced, and no chance of introducing anything you dont want in your tank. as far as my gar, one of them eats pelets and the other i am in the process of training the other. he was eating frozen silversides for a while. all of the panfish are also pellet trained. just the bullhead and the one gar are not completely trained yet.
