Ive never had much luck keeping shad. The only way we were ever able to keep them alive is by immediatly putting them into an aerator tank. They die within minutes in a bucket with no agitation.

these things were like a half an inch long, i was skamania ( summer steelhead) fishing in a small creek and seen big groupes swiming bye so i filled up my water bottle with water from the creek then i used a hardings bag which i used to cary my bait, tied mono on the plastec bag handles sat it in the water and waited then when they passed bye i hurred up an ran it through them put as many as i could into the bottle. and left

It probably has alot to do with temperature too. I live in North Texas where it can be 105+ everyday in july and august, and thats about the time of year I normally catch them. The ones we have here are Threadfin and Gizzard shad. Sometimes we catch individuals that weigh almost a pound! But most are in the 2-3" range.

these were gizzards

dont keep two, only keep them in schools. trust me, i know theyre just fish and most people dont believe that they have much mental capacity, but keeping schooling fish alone or with only one other of their own kind causes psychological damage in the long run. get the smallie if youre gonna do another fish or get a rock bass or two if theyre in your area. hope this helps
