Salt should only be added during water changes and only enough to replace what is removed.
If you have salt sensitive plants they can be placed in a bucket or bin, with lights placed above them and an airstone to provide a little water movement, until the salt treeatment is over. 2 weeks away from any fish at standard tank temps will cause any ich parasites on the plants to die off. Ich die without fish hosts.
