Loaches at the Asian Supermarket

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you're thinking you will need live food for an extended period you could try treating them. It might be easier to rear something like convicts or guppies if you think it's gonna be a while, I'd still treat them though.

Speaking of the Asian market anybody try Whitebate? These are like larval fry cost about $2.50 for a pound. They are about 3" long.

I don't know why.

It works on both my desk top with windows and my tablet with android.

It was a .webp which isn't a standard image file so the website likely doesn't allow for it. I converted it into a jpg and uploaded it, attached below.

OK thanks. Ever hear of'em?

Nope, know nothing about them but they look like they could be a nice food to wean off of live. I guess the important thing about food is that they sink, don't contain things like thiaminase, and that they contain suitable nutrition.

Some basic googling tells me that they contain thiaminase and as such can cause thiamine deficiency. Small silvery whole fish could be a nice option when considering expensive eaters like rays or any predator who need a little encouragement to get off of live. Unfortunately these aren't that but I would be interested if anyone has other ideas.

Although weather loaches are found in tropical countries, they are found in cold areas as well, as far north as N Korea, China, and Japan, so can be considered a temperate water species. There were certain times of the year in Viet Nam where they seemed to be everywhere, people would buy them live, do a quick boil at a restaurant table and eat them in a sort of stew.

I heard of people boiling tofu and adding live dojos which instinctually swim into tofu block, then the tofu is sliced into pieces and served immediately.

I'm pretty sure they were Weather Loaches, Misgurnus Anguillicaudatus. These don't have the pectoral spines like clown loaches right? I'm gonna grab a few this weekend and see what happens. Feeding video to follow :)

Ahhhh I love weather loach, very friendly fish; shame to use as feeders, but to each their own
