Lobster Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Given the amount of ammonia a sub adult retic is capable of producing I'd say water changes 2-3 times a week to keep the nitrates in check in a 120 (of course you'd have to be filtering the tank quite well).

yeah. i agree, you can get a retic for a 120 but you would have to have some super filtration and water change once a week?

Filtration will be good. The stand that came with the tank had what seems to be about a 200 gallon sump as part of it (about 2/3 the length of the tank but about 3 foot deep). There is a lot of wound up hose all around the inside of I assume this connects to the chiller that is also on the stand and will be removed. Anyway I will be doing a custom sump inside this chamber after I modify it a bit (you can currently only get to it by taking the tank off the top so obviously I need to re-engineer it a bit). the tank has two holes drilled in the bottom already with what seems to be 1 inch openings to I can use those existing holes for my plumbing. The tank also has an integrated overflow box at one side so all of that will be incorporated into the sump. So the tank should be set from there it is just up to me doing a good enough job on my part.

As for water changes I do 20-50% changes on all my tanks weekly (depending on what is in the tank). This will just be one more.

Thanks. Just to make it clear though the water volume total will be closer to 300 gallons with the huge sump that is included in this lobster tank stand. Maybe 250 total gallons cause I will only have the sump 1/2 way filled.

lol thanks solomon.

retics would look great too, but id hate those waterchanges.

That sucks, I was wondering why that guy wasn't replying to me about the lobster tank on craigslist.

Hehe sorry. I think I sent him an email 10 minutes after it was posted and picked it up the next day at lunch. It is still in my garage though I gonna have to bribe friends over with beer or something to help me get it in the basement the weight of the stand is insane (I will probably cut the chiller, pump, etc off that should help a lot)

Big tanks with tons of small fish look great.

I'd lean away from rays. Gallons to offset bioload is just as important as swimming space.

Get some measurements on this thing. A 200 gallon sump has got to be HUGE on a 120 gallon tank.

It's cool. I didn't email him till later on in the day. Good to see there's other people on MFK around STL though. Also here's my thread I posted asking for suggestions on what to do with it. It might help you out:
