anybody ever do a lobster tank before?? saltwater lobster not crayfish. any experiences that can be shared?? built my 365 gallon amazon tank last year and since then i have just wanted to do something much bigger. not sure if i want to keep my current stock and add to it or maybe try something completely different. thanks

You could try to hit up a fish market that has lobsters. They may be able to give you some pointers. A lot of deeper water critters can't survive for long in low pressure waters. It would definitely be cool if you could make it work though.

the chiller needed would be more of an issue than pressure. these aren't from the abyss lol

Chiller would bean issue too but it can be bought. Lack of underwater pressure if needed could cause lot of physical changes. Things would probably move around under that shell going from 50 ft under to sea level.

I used a live lobster to cycle my salt water tank a few years ago.

Ok so I had to do some research. They can be kept in an aquarium and pressure and a chiller aren't an issue. They can live in the abyss (365meters) but can also be found in 5-6meter water. As far as temp near freezing to 60ish degrees. But colder is better.
The issue I read was that if left unbanded they are extremely destructive able to move huge rocks and crush almost anything they want to. The other issue is read about was they are really sensitive to sudden oxygenation and temp changes.
When I researched I only looked into new England lobsters so I'm sure there are a lot of differences between species.

I see Lobsters all the time here in Socal scuba diving. They like to hang out between 5-20 feet and love big rocks to hide in.

Oh and California(spiny) lobsters have no claws and no need for bands.. :)

i always wanted a pet lobster!

I didn't keep mine for too much longer after it served its purpose.I bought it at ShopRite,a local supermarket. They usually have a big tank full of live lobsters of different sizes. Some of the Asian markets here sell them along with different types of live crabs.Im not sure if these places have chillers on their holding tanks or not but I didn't seem to need one for mine. When you are ready you can check out the markets in your area and see what is available to you.
