I'll admit I'm kinda in limbo with this tank after losing the GT, and am in brainstorming mode...Next step could be the dreaded "What would you put in this tank...?" thread :grinno:

Has anyone tried this before?

From what I've read so far the Loisellei is described as having an agression level very similar to that of a JD. So if i put a male JD with a Male Loisellei, and a few other SA/CA cichlids in a 90 (Carpintis? GT?) do you think it could work out OK?

Also thought about the Loisellei with the JD and about 4 FM's as I thought the FM's would "dither" by spreading agression (Kinda like this idea better at the moment)

I'm aware this might be a CRAZY idea but still want your opinions

both males forget about it
nut both female i think it will work or male and female what ever

Could work with some patience and careful watching. If they ever were to fight the Loisellei has the upper hand. I don't really see a problem with it though. Would make an interesting tank, especially the way your Decor is setup ( which looks awesome by the way). I think you should go for it. The FM dithers is not such a bright idea as they can pose a threat to other cichlids even though they are "weak". I say a group of giant danio's will do just fine.

My female loisellei (7") and male JD (6") live in a 100 gallon together. The loisellei loves to chase the male JD eveynow and then. I wish he would get bigger and kick her arse!

THX Cross127...actually added a couple amazon swords last week so I have to show you new pics

Well I was thinking that 2 males would be ok at first...But I already have a female JD right now and a FM, so I'm in good shape to try it out i guess..could swap the FM for a Carpintis?

Rapps has Loisellei right now for $40 and they're 5-6"

Not sure about shipping tho...

So you say go for it?

Loisellei are going to be more aggressive than carpinte or a JD. In a 100gal, eventually someone will end up dead. It might not happen immediately, but once the loisellei puts on size and gets to maturity, look out.

Giant danios wouldn't last very long with a guapote. Maybe larger tinfoil barbs or something similar. I've had 2-3" midas or 2" istlanum successfully hunt 3-4" giant danios in the past.

And live plants with a large CA cichlid? Get another tank and use live plants there. A large CA fish will either uproot, eat, destroy or just relocate any decorations (including plants). With all the fish I've kept, plastic or silk are the only way to go. Floating plants or ones you can tie down to large pieces of driftwood would work. Anything not anchored WILL become floating, whether designed that way or not :P

I haven't kept Loisellei myself, but I've seen a larger male strive for dominance in a 240gal against some big CAs (10"+ JD, 10" dovii, 13" blackbelt, etc). and it would not give an inch.

And yeah, being in NY state means you can do next day UPS ground shipping from Rapps. You'd be looking at $15? $20? for a box of fish (jealous!). I get fish shipped from him to Maine, which is just outside next day ground range, so it's ~ $90 for a box. Well worth it though!

My male Loisellei is separated for now because he's a super-killing machine and destroyer of fish. Even my female Loisellei would make mincemeat of a JD. She's quick, mean, and bad to the bone too...both are wild caught purchased from Rapps. (Now if only I could get them to breed lol)

For it to work I would think both would have to be really mello fish.
