Thanks everyone, I wasnt aware that turtles were solitary. I know about the size of tank rule. I rescued this turtle from pretty bad conditions, he was living in a ten gallon tank with no completely dry area and and not enough water to actually swim in, somewhere in between the two. I definitely wont consider getting another turtle until I can upgrade, if I decide to at all. I got some new substrate as a couple of you suggested and he seems to be a lot more comfortable now. His only problem now is having so much room he's not sure what to do with it, and not being fast enough to chase down his feeder treats that he gets occasionally.
