A friend of mine recently purchased 2 long fin tiger oscars( for their aggressive nature, yeh he's deluded). I've never seen 1 grow to full size if any1 could shed some light on how to keep them in prime condition so i can pass the knowledge on it would be highly appreciated.

I dont see a problem raising two Oscars together, as long as he has sufficient filtration and room. Each Oscar will grow to 12"+ and fast. My O was purchased at 1" and was up to almost 12" in the first year. These fish are very messy. If the tank is not kept clean they will get hole in the head. Without knowing the tank size and filter I cant tell you how often to do water changes. I have a 150 with one Oscar and one large pleco. I have a drip system that provides about 30 gal of fresh water per day. In addition, I do two 30% water changes twice a week. I am running two Eheim 2217 canisters. My O is very happy. I have another O on order that I will be adding once I grow it large enough.

If you can find out the tank size I can help some more.

he got a 6ft tank on its way not sure of the filtration he'll use, he's apparently putting 4 convicts with them as well (against my advice). Is there anything particularly different to raising long fin as opposed to 'standard' oscars.

:iagree::iagree:

That abut sums it all up.

Also since your adding convicts, make sure to have some good hiding places for them. Because your Os will get pretty big pretty fast.

Veiled O's are same as other O's. Treat them the same. Oscars are great!! He is going to love them. My wife, kids, and I talk to ours all the time. I compare it to owning a dog, personality wise. Very loving fish, if you take good care of it.

thanx i'll pass the info along, really not sure if this guy is up to owning anything more than goldfish yet lol but i'll try to help him along an get some pics of his fish up asap.

The key to keeping oscars is several water changes a week. This will help them grow and prevent hole-n-head.
