As long as the tank is wide enough so the fish doesnt get gill curl from always turning sharply then it's large enough IMO.
How wide do you think that needs to be? and what do you base that on? I have seen big ones in 60 gallon tanks with out gill curl is that big enough?

What's important isn't the exact volume of water the tank holds but the footprint. People tend to go for long tanks that are relatively short in height. What really matters for arowanas is length and width since they don't bother much with depth anyways. By shaving off a few good inches from the height, you're looking at a huge difference in the volume of water.
OK then what is the min foot print you would use?

Silvers get at minimum two feet long. You need a tank wide enough for him to turn around.

I'm of the thought that just because a silver can fit in X tank doesn't mean he should be in there. You could live in a closet your whole life, but would you want to? Would you be happy?

But does the tank need to be 2 foot wide for one to turn? No i would not want to live in a closet... but that was not really the question was it?

min foot print.... I'd say 72"x20"?

I have 2 16-18 inch silvers in my 215 and theyll probably be in there for life, I think that should be big enough for them

I think as long as a fish can bend his body without doing a vertical turning is fine hehe..

actually a better representation would be a human in a jail cell since thats a better comparison of size ratio

Either way, it's not comfortable. Aros are jumpy & skittish fish as is. Couple that with a tank too small and it doesn't make for a happy or healthy fish.
