thats a bit of a stretch I'd think but you could do a jardini or an asian in an 18" wide
 
I'd say anything around 60x18x26 is good, which is 120 gallons for a single fish. Obviously bigger is always better. But then again it also depends on what kind of Arowana. SA arowanas get longer, hitting just under 30 inches in captivity. So you're looking at a fish that will turn around really often if you give it a shorter tank. However if you get short body arowanas like Jardinis or asians, the outcome is different. Better yet if you can afford it, custom order a tank. My dream design would be a 90x20x18 tank which comes out to roughly about 140 gallons. It's just 6 inches short of the length of a 300 gallon but less than half the water. 20 inch width is more than enough to turn and the height imo won't matter much if you're only keeping arowanas in it. Should the width still be a little under adding two more inches to make it 22 only adds about 14 gallons of water. It all depends how much you're willing to go out and spend.

Many people in Asia keep arowanas in very small tanks by US standards for a very long time. I personally know a guy in singapore who has a 23" 24k gold keep in a 80 gallon for 15 years and till this day the fish is fine. There are people who keep them in 18'' wide tanks and they are healthy. Many people in china keep them in 16-18" wide tanks and the fish are fine.

I can also understand that not all fish have the same temperament and some may stress themselves out due to the space around them regardless if the water and tempertaure are fine.

I have keep adult asian, australian and south american silver arowanas in 3x2x2 and 4x2x2 for over a year some 2 years at a time before they moved into their new tanks, and the fish have been fine.
I personally believe that water quality and tempertaure stability are the most important factors for keeping all arowana healthy, but in some fish the size of the tank can also have an effect on it's health.

i honestly think your right because they think how i think ok measure how long the fish will be and wide than get a tank that they have room swimming around ive seen aros in small tanks and than when i asked the minimum tank size they said 180 but how could that be when they had that adult in a 90gallon for 5 years now and it does look happy hes swimming around thats what i personally thinkhttp://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/images/smilies/nilly.gif
